There's a line from the movie 'Lord of War' that I really like, and it's when the Interpol Agent Valentine is talking to the main character Yuri, who is an illegal arms dealer selling weapons in African warzones, about his job. He says to Yuri,

I wouldn't say the m2 is the mother of all machines guns, the maxim gun must absolutely come before the m2.
I prefer the vickers because of it being water cooled
Writing a sci-fi story about a war involving humanity far in the future (2300s-2400s). I just got done writing a chapter where one of the characters is manning a M2. I've included it in my universe because I honestly can't imagine if we choose to continue to use firearms by then (as my humanity has), we'll still be using some variation of the M2.
