The Gillespies have spent decades fighting to preserve the Riverview Lands for future generations to come. This is Milan and Marlene's house in Vancouver. Since he retired he has spent most of his time each year during the warmer months in his back yard. You will see him picking cherries in a tree (my sister and I gave this to him as a birthday gift 20 years ago and it grew big as you can see) he and I picked one bucket each that day. You will also see a shed that he and his father Dominik made when I was a child. My sister gave him a fig tree from her back yard (you will see here) and Milan planted it this year in memory of Joze his beloved cousin in Dobindo, Slovenial. This is where Milan is most happy and Marlene also plants favorite flowers including the gift from Majda, and this is the yard and house my sister and I grew up in. The sundeck has a view towards the Pacific Ocean and United States which you can see on a clear day.

May 8, 1993 and master Japanese gardener Harry Nomura saunters over to an eight year old Kuroi Matsu. He'd originally grown the black pine from seed and then presented it to the Reiters for their garden park. After pruning it he then surveys the tranquil scene before him and states, "I like". A man of few words, this is great praise from one who'd dedicated his life to the joy of gardening. The plot of land that the garden occupied became available after a fire had destroyed the original neighbouring building. The Reiter's were then able to purchase the land realizing Bill's dream of a "Nihon-no-oasis". Outside the thick cedar hedging ringing the Burnaby, B.C. garden's solitude, was the busy Canada Way artery. You can hear the heavier trucks and motorcycles noisily churning by from time to time but Ebba says that with the stream bubbling into the pond, only the loudest made its way into their consciousness. The Reiters have sold the house now and the garden is no longer there, so watching this video does fill them both with a regret. Along with that, comes a reflective memory of the joy that this beautiful natural creation brought them for so many years. And so many, many birds - every day. Thanks to CHUM radio's Mike Occomore for asking Bill if he wanted the VHS tape of the garden back after so long. Now where did that Sony video camera and its original tapes go? More digitizing!

Phil Thornburg, landscape designer, contractor and owner of Winterbloom, Inc., has been creating private Edens, one home at a time, since 1983. Today, his own private Eden features a tangerine chair focal point with a cluster of Dulcy Mahar memorial flamingos dipping their beaks into a calming water feature. But it wasn't always this way. In 2003 he and his wife Barbara purchased a house that was overgrown with shrubs and trees. Their first step was to create a 10 year landscape plan that would fit their available time and budget. The major milestones included: • Remove the overgrowth and chip it up into compost and surface mulch, leaving only one rhodie, a Norway spruce and one little star magnolia. • Devise a gravel path system to function as a camouflaged drainage conduit and provide access to the Winterbloom business operations in the daylight basement. • Address the water that pooled during the rainy season in the front driveway and entry garden by regrading the soil, creating a catchment basin at the lowest point, and directing it to a drywell away from the house. • Direct all of the house downspouts through the drainage system into dry wells. • Research a variety of plants from similar worldwide ecosystems to create a paradise of never ending plant color and drama. • Create artistically composed views from the main front room window, kitchen window, and deck. • Build a veggie and fruit garden room partially screened from the entertaining area. • Construct a greenhouse and shade cloth storage place for overflow plants and hardscape materials for the landscaping business.

Take a walk through the beautiful and serene Riverview Arboretum, in British Columbia! This relaxing video tour is set to music and includes bits of history and trivia. Music: 🤍 Riverview Hospital was a mental health institution for 100 years, and was Western Canada's first and most important arboretum and cultivated tree collection. The grounds were designed to emulate an English country estate and was intended to be therapeutic for the patients who lived and worked on the site. When the majority of the hospital buildings closed, the film industry became a major presence at Riverview and it is said to be the busiest filming location in Canada! These public lands sit on the unceded territory of the kʷikʷəƛ̓əm First Nation, and the site has been recently renamed səmiq̓ʷəʔelə, meaning Place of the Great Blue Heron, to reflect the culture and history that existed here for millennia before European colonisation of British Columbia. Come and enjoy these lush and historical park-like grounds in person! Be respectful of the patients who still live there. There are new and still functioning hospitals and treatment centres still on the site. The Riverview/səmiq̓ʷəʔelə site is currently undergoing a multi-stakeholder, master-planning process to lay the groundwork for future development of the lands. Hartley Lane Allotments entry into the 2011 Rotherham show. Each year a small number of the areas allotment sites compete in the horticultural section at the Rotherham town show. On an area measuring 6ft by 4ft, the gardeners display veg, fruit & flowers that they have grown on their allotments. Point are awarded for the number of different crops, the quality of the veg and presentation.
Dorothy Stearman Finnie "Ms. Dottie" June 12, 1942 - January 18, 2015 Dorothy Stearman Finnie "Ms. Dottie", 72, passed away on January 18, 2015. She was born to the late James and Alice Creason Stearman. She is also preceded in death by brothers, James, John, and Larry along with her favorite son-in-law, Paul Hulsman. Ms. Dottie was a cafeteria manager for Isaac Shelby elementary school. She is survived by her children, Bonita Davis, Lisa Hulsman, Kenny Sullivan (Debbie), James Sullivan (Stephaine), and Joe Sullivan along with 13 grandchildren and 9 ½ great-grandchildren. She will also be missed by her siblings, Lucille Jackson (Ted), Louise Johnson, Fred Harmon, and her long time best friend and Bingo Buddy, Kathy Allsmiller. Funeral services will be Saturday at 12 p.m. at Louisville Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, 4400 Dixie Highway. Visitation will be 3-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and Saturday from 10 a.m. until time of service.
