In this quick tutorial, I am going to create a swap file on my Linux desktop. I'm also going to show you how to remove a swap file. But if any process is eating away your memory and you want to clear it, Linux provides a way to flush or clear memory cache. I have a small web server with a large enough load with an average visitor of 5 thousand users per day, with 1 gigabyte of memory the server can handle it well. load average below 1 percent, uptime has been years and and never restarted or encountered problems. Nowadays with increased amount of RAM, swap partition is not used at all by some systems. There is no need of large swap. So, you can create small swap file and if it happened that you need more swap you can easily change the size of your swap file. It is especially useful for small size SSD. UPDATE: Since the release of the kernel 5.7 creating a Swapfile with fallocate will not work at reboot. Create one with the command "dd if=/dev/zero of=/swapfile bs=1M count=512 status=progress" (for a 512M swapfile for example) and everything will work fine again. In this video I am installing Arch Linux on a UEFI system with the rEFInd bootloader. EDIT: at 19.39 after rebooting the machine, type "nmtui" to setup WiFi! We look at how we can remap keys on your keyboard in Linux with Xorg, using xmodmap. In my example, I'll remap the Context Menu key to Right Super, since this key is missing on some keyboards, being replaced by a Function key for multimedia functions. 1. Determine the keycode of the key you want to remap using this command: xev | awk -F'[ )]+' '/^KeyPress/ { a[NR+2] } NR in a { printf "%-3s %s\n", $5, $8 }' 2. Press the key you want to remap to obtain the keycode: 135 Menu In this example, the keycode is "135" and the keysym is "Menu" 3. In a text editor, enter this line: keycode 135 = Super_R 4. Save the file in your home directory as: .Xmodmap (don't forget the dot "." at the beginning) 5. To apply changes, either reboot or run this command: xmodmap .Xmodmap Note that if you hotplug your keyboard by unplugging and plugging it back in, you will need to reapply the changes with the above command. If you want to add comments to your .Xmodmap file, pre-append with "!" instead of "#". I install Arch inside VirtualBox, so install VirtualBox if you want to follow along. NOTE: I did this as a UEFI installation. If you want to see this done using MBR, check out the 2019 Arch Linux Installation Guide, but be aware the pacstrap commands have changed since that video (be sure to pacstrap /mnt base linux linux-firmware): 🤍 - Arch Linux Installtion Guide 2019 SOME COMMANDS I RAN: Using fdisk: fdisk -l (lists out the partitions) fdisk /dev/sda In fdisk, "m" for help In fdisk, "o" for DOS partition or "g" for GPT In fdisk, "n" for add new partition In fdisk, "p" for primary partition (if using MBR instead of GPT) In fdisk, "t" to change partition type In fdisk, "w" (write table to disk) Make filesystem: mkfs.fat -F32 /dev/sda1 mkswap /dev/sda2 swapon /dev/sda2 mkfs.ext4 /dev/sda3 Base Install: mount /dev/sda3 /mnt (mounts it to mnt on live image) pacstrap /mnt base linux linux-firmware genfstab -U /mnt TWO GREATER THAN SIGNS /mnt/etc/fstab (YouTube doesn't allow angle brackets) Chroot: arch-chroot /mnt (change into root directory of our new installation) ln -sf /usr/share/zoneinfo/REGION/CITY /etc/localtime hwclock systohc (sets the hardware clock) pacman -S nano nano /etc/locale.gen locale-gen nano /etc/hostname nano /etc/hosts Users and passwords: passwd (set root pass) useradd -m username (make another user) passwd username (set that user's password) usermod -aG wheel,audio,video,optical,storage username Sudo: pacman -S sudo EDITOR=nano visudo GRUB: pacman -S grub pacman -S efibootmgr dosfstools os-prober mtools (if doing UEFI) mkdir /boot/EFI (if doing UEFI) mount /dev/sda1 /boot/EFI #Mount FAT32 EFI partition (if doing UEFI) grub-install target=x86_64-efi bootloader-id=grub_uefi recheck (if doing UEFI) grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg Networking: pacman -S networkmanager systemctl enable NetworkManager Reboot: exit the chroot by typing "exit" umount /mnt (unmounts /mnt) reboot (or shutdown now if doing this in VirtualbBox) Remember to detach the ISO in VirtualBox before reboot. UPDATE 2: To enable the cups service simply use cups.service. UPDATE : Since the July 2020 ISO the wifi-menu command is not anymore available. To connect to a wireless network use iwctl as per the Arch Wiki.
