Several floors of a three-storey building were destroyed in Russian strikes on the Ukrainian port city of Mykolaiv overnight, officials said on Thursday. The attack caused a fire in the building that affected an area of 450 sq metres and burned for several hours. Why did it take me so long to visit Mykolaiv, Ukraine?! It ended up being my favourite new city in Ukraine in 2020! Not only does it have a super interesting history, stretching all the way back to Greek times, but it's also got the up-and-coming energy I love seeing all around Ukraine. We actually had only planned to stop in Mykolaiv for 24 hours on our way to Nova Kakhovka, but we liked it so much we ended up coming back for two extra nights. If you're an expat in Ukraine and you haven't spent a weekend in Mykolaiv, I seriously think you're missing out. Russian strikes hit a residential building in the port city of Mykolaiv on Wednesday night. He is a faithful minister from Grace of God Church in Mykolaiv. His family's business was destroyed by this missile strike. Please pray for Mykolaiv and pray for Ukraine.

Mykolaiv mayor Oleksandr Senkevych said on Wednesday (May 17) Russian forces hit Ukraine's southern city with another missile strike. Senkevych said in telegram messaging app that a car dealer office, a shopping mall, several residential high-rise buildings and one industrial object were hit. A video released by Ukraine’s Emergency Services showed firefighters working on the site of damaged buildings. Reuters was able to confirm the location of the footage from the exterior designs of the Suzuki car dealership, the nearby shopping mall and the material used in the pavement which matched file imagery of the area. Reuters was not able to independently confirm the date the video was filmed. Russia denies deliberately targeting civilians in its full-scale invasion that has killed thousands of people, uprooted millions and destroyed towns. Mykolaiv, a shipbuilding center and port, had a population of about 470,000 people before the war. The city has suffered heavy Russian bombardments throughout the war. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visits the war-damaged southern city of Mykolaiv for the first time since the Russian invasion in a rare trip outside Kyiv. It was the Ukrainian leader's first visit to the southern city since Russia invaded Ukraine almost four months ago. The president's office published video Saturday of Zelenskyy surveying a badly damaged high-rise residential building and holding meetings with local officials. He also visited soldiers on the southern front line. The president’s office did not say when the visit took place. Russian troops were driven from Mykolaiv in early March after reaching the outskirts of the regional capital. Meanwhile, a Ukrainian official says “fierce battles" are raging in villages near the eastern city of Sievierodonetsk, which Russian troops have been trying to take control of for weeks. "Now, the most-fierce battles are near Sievierodonetsk. They [Russia]) do not control the city entirely," Sergiy Gaiday, the governor of the eastern Luhansk region, said on social media site Telegram. "In nearby villages there are very difficult fights in Toshkivska, Zolote. They are trying to break through but failing... Our defenders are fighting Russians in all directions. Recently, they shot down a plane and took captives." Following Russian troops' withdrawal from the city of Kherson, hope has been restored to Mykolaiv's residents. Ever since the war in Ukraine started on February 24, the port city, located about 60km from Kherson, has been subjected to almost daily bombings. The regional governor Vitaly Kim announced on Friday evening that it was now "fully liberated". UKRAINIAN forces have been defending Mykolaiv airport that 'came under attack from Russian tanks' according to the National Police service. In dramatic footage, several explosions and gunshots can be seen and heard going off as the Russian invasion of Ukraine intensifies on the thirteenth day. The Ukrainian military claims that Russian forces are "deserting in some areas" of Ukraine. They said Russia's troops are "demoralised" after suffering heavy losses in manpower and military equipment, with some leaving their posts. Mikael visited the city of Mykolaiv, in the south of Ukraine and only 20 km from the front line, with his non-profit Bikes4Ukraine. He had a meeting with the Mayor, Oleksandr Senkevych, about the future urban development of the city and the collaboration between Denmark and Mykolaiv.
