- The SDG Moment serves to place an annual spotlight on the Sustainable Development Goals and will be held at the beginning of the United Nation’s General Assembly’s High-Level Week. It takes place as the world faces a deepening cost-of-living crisis that carries huge implications for the advancement of the SDGs, especially in developing countries. Convened by the UN Secretary-General António Guterres, the Moment will provide world leaders with a platform to showcase the bold actions and solutions that are needed to set the world on course towards achieving the SDGs. The SDG Moment event is expected to build the momentum as we head towards the SDG Summit in 2023. At a time of great uncertainty, the SDGs – a blueprint for ending poverty, tackling the climate crisis and boosting the economy – show the way forward to a better future for all on a safe and healthy planet. To scale up action on the SDGs would require transformational change with regard to current policies, governance arrangements and economic systems. There is a need for equitable access to vaccine supply, expansive stimulus packages in key sectors and access to financing for developing countries. About the SDG Moment The third SDG Moment will take place in-person on Monday, 19 September 2022. This 90-minute event in the United Nations General Assembly Hall, will set the scene and lead into the Transforming Education Summit. To this end, the SDG Moment 2022 will: Reinforce the continued relevance of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and build momentum for major summits and intergovernmental meetings. Highlight urgent actions that for an equitable, inclusive and accelerated transition to sustainable development. Demonstrate that transformative change at scale is possible between now and 2030. #UNGA #UnitedNations #sustainabledevelopementgoals

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were adopted by the United Nations in 2015 as part of Agenda 2030 – see: 🤍 Sustainable Development Goals – your questions answered: 🤍 In Video 1, CAFOD explains what the SDGs are and why they are transformational in the way the world fights extreme poverty, inequality, injustice and climate change. In Video 2: CAFOD explains what civil society groups can get involved and help make sure we get there. “We are faced not with two separate crises, one environmental and the other social, but rather with one complex crisis which is both social and environmental. Strategies for a solution demand an integrated approach to combating poverty, restoring dignity to the excluded, and at the same time protecting nature.” – Pope Francis, Laudato Si’ 139. In 2015, world leaders from 193 countries agreed the Sustainable Development Goals – or SDGs – the world’s new action plan for the next 15 years to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger, fight inequality, tackle climate change and achieve sustainable development for all. The SDGs follow the Millennium Development Goals - or MDGs –agreed in 2000 in a global coordinated attempt to tackle development issues. There are four underlining principles that come with the SDGs and that are transformational in the way we work on development in the future: Firstly they are universal and apply to every country, rich and poor, north and south, developed and developing. Secondly, they integrate all dimensions of sustainability: economic development, social progress and environmental protection. Thirdly, the SDGs tell us we should leave no one behind. And finally, the SDGs require the participation of all. Taken together with the Paris Climate Change agreement and the Pope’s Encyclical Laudato Si, the SDGs provide a new framework for approaching sustainable development. Animation by Dee at 🤍 - CAFOD works in communities across Africa, Asia and Latin America, helping people to tackle the poverty and injustice they face. What is the progress in Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) post Covid-19?

00:05:54
30.12.2022

According to the Sustainable Development Goal report 2022, the world is no longer making progress on the SDGs for the second year in a row. The COVID-19 pandemic has wiped out 6 years of progress on the SDGs globally. The escalating conflicts and climate breakdowns are only adding fuel to the fire. But all is not lost yet. Globally, $17 trillion USD was mobilized for the COVID-19 recovery, mainly in rich countries. Yet the question remains till what extent do such recovery funds support SDG transformations. In a context of increased geopolitical rivalries and fragmented multilateralism, the SDGs remain the only comprehensive and universal vision for socioeconomic prosperity and environmental sustainability. We have 6 parameters out of the 17 that the world can strategically push forward to make up for the lost years and to gain back the momentum. These are Poverty, Malnutrition, maternal mortality, education, sex ratio and water and sanitation. If countries focus on these six of the 17 SDGs, they can turn the COVID-19 pandemic from a short-term crisis into long-term gains. The analysis compares 3 growth scenarios and confirms how better results can be achieved only with a strategic SDG push. ‘No COVID-19’ scenario describes economic growth without the impact of the pandemic. The ‘baseline COVID-19’ scenario represents significant pandemic-period increases in poverty and hunger and substantial longer-term negative consequences ‘SDGs Push’ scenario outlines the impact of targeted policy interventions that can accelerate progress towards a fairer, resilient and green future. For example, Poverty is one of the most predominant factors to tackle through SDGs. Bad enough, COVID-19 disrupted progress and pushed more people around the world into poverty and displacement. The rate of poverty was 9.6% at the start of 2020, instead of decreasing it by 0.1% in a non-covid scenario, it shot up to 11.9% by the end of the year. But an SDG push can bring it down as low as 6.9% by 2030, as compared to the 8.4% if we let the situation continue as it is. And this goes for rest of the parameters as well. So now, where does India stand in all of this? According to the latest sustainability report, India ranks 121 among the total 163 nations in the SDG with an overall score of 60.3. This is marginally better than Pakistan at 125 but worse than Bangladesh at 104. While the country made progress in climate action and responsible consumption of resources, the progress went down with Sustainable city management. COVID had an impact on India as well! Current projections show almost 8% of children will be malnourished in 2050. And 10 out of 1,000 children will continue to die in 2050 even with the SDG push. The only way forward is to strategically push SDGs to get back on track. The strategic implementation of SDGs is the bedrock of social inclusion, clean energy, responsible consumption and universal access to public services. In a multipolar world SDGs is our only card to ensure worldwide dialogue and cooperation until 2030 and beyond. Down to Earth is Science and Environment fortnightly published by the Society for Environmental Communication, New Delhi. We publish news and analysis on issues that deal with sustainable development, which we scan through the eyes of science and environment.

UN Chief on SDG Moment | Sustainable Development Goals | United Nations

19.09.2022

Remarks by António Guterres, Secretary-General of the UN, on the SDG Moment 2022. Opening the Sustainable Developments Goals (SDGs) Moment in New York, UN Secretary-General said the meeting happens “at a critical point" in the world and urged countries to take more action. Listing several crises, António Guterres said that “each peril is pushing the Sustainable Development Goals further out of reach.” According to the UN chief, in the face of such perils, “it is tempting to put our long-term development priorities to one side. To leave them for a sunny day. But development cannot wait.” “The education of our children cannot wait. Dignified jobs cannot wait. Full equality for women and girls cannot wait. Comprehensive health care, meaningful climate action, biodiversity protection — these cannot be left for tomorrow,” said the Secretary-General. Guterres said everyone must “do more to lift up women and girls in every walk of life” and to “save our planet — which is quite literally on fire.” For the UN chief, this means “addressing the triple planetary crisis of climate breakdown, biodiversity loss and pollution” and moving away from a “suicidal dependence” on fossil fuels and jump-starting the renewable energy transition in every country. - The SDG Moment serves to place an annual spotlight on the Sustainable Development Goals. It takes place as the world faces a deepening cost-of-living crisis that carries huge implications for the advancement of the SDGs, especially in developing countries. This event sets the scene and leads into the Transforming Education Summit, featuring the SDG “To-Do List” for the world presented by the Secretary-General’s SDG Advocates Co-Chairs, a stocktaking moment and SDG Dialogues focused on solutions for inequalities and climate and environmental challenges. Convened by the UN Secretary-General António Guterres, the Moment provides world leaders with a platform to showcase the bold actions and solutions that are needed to set the world on course towards achieving the SDGs. The SDG Moment event is expected to build the momentum as we head towards the SDG Summit in 2023. What: The annual SDG Moment kicks off UN High-Level Week (20-23 September) as world leaders gather at the UN Headquarters in New York to highlight transformative solutions for tackling the multiple crises that have unleashed vicious cycles of poverty, hunger and inequalities worldwide. In these challenging times, the SDG Moment will seek to urgently scale up ambition and solidarity to advance the successful implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals – the World’s To Do List as the best pathway for a safer, healthier and more inclusive future. Why: The combined crises—the war in Ukraine, the COVID-19 pandemic, rising food insecurity and a debilitating economy—could lead to an additional 75 to 95 million people living in extreme poverty in 2022. As called for in the UN Secretary-General’s Our Common Agenda, a renewed commitment to international cooperation and global solidarity is needed to set the SDGs back on track. With time running out as we approach the midpoint in 2023 of SDG implementation, this year’s SDG Moment is a major turning point for accelerating meaningful SDG action. About the SDG Moment General Assembly resolution 74/4 calls on the Secretary-General to organize an annual moment in the context of the General Debate of the General Assembly to highlight inspiring SDG action. The SDG Moment, convened for the first time in 2020, serves as a check-in on the status of the SDGs. K-Pop sensations BTS perform their hit song Permission to Dance in a video produced at the United Nations. The video accompanies the bands remarks at the SDG Moment and is meant to draw their audiences attention to the importance of Keeping the Promise of the Sustainable Development Goals and to inspire action. What is your promise? - 🤍 - The SDG Moment serves to place an annual spotlight on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and will be held at the beginning of the United Nation’s General Assembly’s High-Level Week. It takes place as the world experiences a deeply uneven response to the COVID-19 pandemic, which risks creating a two-tier recovery with significant implications for the advancement of the SDGs, especially in developing countries. Convened by the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, the Moment will provide world leaders with a platform to showcase the bold plans, actions and solutions that are needed to end the COVID-19 pandemic and set the world on course towards achieving the SDGs. Held in advance of major meetings on food systems, climate, energy, jobs and social protection, the SDG Moment event is expected to build the momentum needed to deliver on the Decade of Action and Keep the Promise of the SDGs. #GlobalGoals #UNGA
