Do New Mexicans put chile on everything? Does everyone in New Mexico have a state flag tattoo? And has the whole population seen a UFO? We’ll get to all that stuff and a whole lot more! So grab a chimichanga and a margarita - we’re gonna unbox the state of New Mexico! Oooh. Where are we? Looks like a kitchen. Someone is making green chile bean and rice stuffed carne adovada sopapillas with cheese. But this isn’t just ANY green chile bean and rice stuffed carne adovada sopapillas with cheese. These are NEW MEXICAN green chile bean and rice stuffed carne adovada sopapillas with cheese. But it’s New Mexico, we should get out of the kitchen. More on the food later. After all, this state is glorious outside, pal. New Mexico isn’t JUST amazing food. It’s really pretty out there, too. A quarter of New Mexico is forested, which you probably didn’t know. But it’s a lot more than that. The terrain’s pretty diverse. There’s large mountain ranges and barren deserts and beautiful plains and even caves! It’s actually the 5th largest state by size, but only 35th in population, and there’s only 17 people per square mile. So there’s a lot of space. Which is good in today’s America. As we’ll see it’s a very misunderstood state and one with a lot of state pride. There are all sorts of various regions of interest, some of which are super culturally rich. Others are vast and isolated. Many are plain rundown, but more on that later, too. To really get to know New Mexico, we have to see all the different areas one by one, and then we can understand this state a lot more. But while Arizona has had incredibly growth, New Mexico simply hasn't, at least not relative to its neighbor. Which is a little odd because, from the outside, the two states seem very similar. This is the Blue Hole of Santa Rosa. On the surface, it’s just an unassuming pond in the middle of the desert in New Mexico. At the bottom, though, there is a large metal grate over the entrance to a massive underwater cavern. Importantly, this grate wasn’t always there, and I think we all know that a metal grate is only installed for one reason. So, in this video, we’re going to look at the horrifying incidents that led to this grate being installed. The Blue Hole in Santa Rosa, New Mexico is an iconic roadside attraction on Route 66, nut its history dates back long before The Mother Road. Or any roads for that matter. Starting with Native Americans long before the arrival of Europeans, to Conquistadors, cowboys, railroad passengers, roadtrippers, and possibly even Billy the Kid, the Blue Hole has been a popular spot to stop during a long journey for centuries. The water in the Blue Hole comes from a cave system near its bottom that generates about 3,000 gallons of water per minute. The constant refreshing of the water leads to it being remarkably clear. The water completely cycles out about every six hours. The Blue is about 80 feet deep and 80 feet in diameter at the surface. It widens the deeper it goes until the diameter reaches 130 feet across. The water keeps a consistent 62 degrees year-round. Winter is apparently the busiest diving season, with other dive sites in the area being too cold. The cave system at the bottom of the Blue Hole has led to the death of three divers, and is gated off to prevent access because of the danger of exploring it. On our visit the weather was a bit too cold to go for a swim, but we explore the area surrounding the Blue Hole and talk about it's history.
